New Phenoms crack the 3 GHz limit without any difficulty
Pictures and Super Pi results of AMD's 45 Nanometer Phenoms
It seems like the guys of
itopc.com got their hands on two engineering samples of AMD's anxiously expected 45 Nanometer Phenoms and checked out their clock speed capabilities.
Both 45 nm Phenoms are compatible to current AM2+ sockets, have an integrated DDR2 memory controller, 6 MiByte L3 cache and run on 2.2 respectively 2.3 Gigahertz default clock speed. The older Phenoms had to get by on 2 Mibyte L3 cache.
In addition to the pictures of the new processors itopc.com delivers results from the Super PI M1 benchmark, which the processors ran with 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 and 3.4 Gigahertz. While it took more than 25 seconds to finish the test with 2.8 GHz, it took only 20 seconds with 3.4 GHz.
This looks like the smaller architecture paid off, since it was not necessary to increase the core voltage to reach the 2.8 GHz clock speed. It is unknown, if the 3.4 Gigahertz clock speed with the core voltage of 1.5 Volt was reached with air cooling.
