Maximal HDD capacity increased by 50 percent

Seagate: HDD with 1.5 Terabyte announced for August

Author: Jan Trommler (Jul 11, 2008) - It is commonly known that the Terabyte would not be the limit of hard drive capacity. Now Seagate announced the first desktop device with 1.5 Terabyte (about 1.36 TiByte) via a press release.

Unfortunately the press release does not reveal how many platters the Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB uses to achieve this capacity. Although there is no official data sheet, yet, we estimate four platters with 375 GiByte each. The other specifications match the current default of desktop devices: 7,200 rpm, 32 Megabyte cache and SATA 2 Interface.

Additionally Seagate introduced two new notebook hard drive series. The top models of the Momentus 7200.4 and the Momentus 5400.6 are said to have a capacity of 500 Gigabyte each. While the models of the Momentus 5400.6 series, as the name indicates, run with 5,400 rpm and have 8 Megabyte cache, the Momentus 7200.4 drives run at 7,200 rpm and have a 16 Megabyte buffer.

Seagate gives a five years warranty on all the hard drives. Shipment of the Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB is said to begin in August. The notebook devices will follow in Q4 2008. Prices were not given, yet.
