A technical possibility

Octa Crossfire with eight GPUs soon?

In an interview with techtree.com Chris Hook, a public relations representative of AMD, said, that there have been experiments with eight GPUs. It is unknown, when this technolgy will be released to the customers.
In the laboratory test, four Radeon HD 4870 X2 have been combined. But AMD will not release any drivers for such an Octa Crossfire bundle. In consideration of a motherboard that would have to be able to bear four dual slot graphics cards and the required scaling, Octa Crossfire should be seen as nothing more than a technical gimmick.

Even Crossfire X with three GPUs is scaling moderate only, the power of a fourth chip is unused most of the time. The reason for this experimental Octa Crossfire , for sure, is not to get it to the markets, but creating a base for the engineers of future multi GPU generations.
