Checking a Qantum of Solace

James Bond 007: Impressions of the game and details about the demo

Author: Marc Sauter (Oct 07, 2008) - In the demo of Quantum of Solace you can experience a section of the latest Bond movie that won’t hit screens before late October or early November (depending on the individual release dates).

The distinctive James Bond theme is followed by the roaring Metro Goldwyn Mayer lion – the intro already invokes the Bond 007 feeling.

Unfortunately we don’t hear the famous “The name’s Bond. James Bond.” even once in the whole demo since it is far too short. The only playable level is set in Siena, Italy, where Bond is chasing an informant. Even on highest difficulty a skilled gamer needs less than 10 minutes to see the end – from a 800 MiB download you actually could expect a little more. But there are though gun fights with huge explosions, weapons typical for 007 like the P99 and Daniel Craig at his best.

At least his alter ego with the original voice is a graphical success. James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace is based on an upgraded version of the Call of Duty 4 engine that convinces with good textures. Our screenshots were taken at 1,680 x 1,050 with maximal details and 4x TSSAA/16:1 AF. Unfortunately the game has an fps limiter so more than 30 frames per second are not possible – therefore the aiming is a little wobbly.

As gameplay is concerned, the 007 title offers the usual shooter menu with some new ideas: You can for example use a silencer for your weapons and sneak up on your opponents. If you are close enough to one of the enemies, you can press a button to activate a Quicktime Event: Bond knocks out the opponent if you move the crosshairs on the right spot and click your mouse.

When you are hit the “Barrel of Death” starts to cover your screen and the colors fade into grey. If you receive a final hit, an animation will start and blood starts to run down over your screen. Apropos blood: In Quantum of solace there is only little of the live juice. If you hit an opponent you will instead notice an X on the crosshairs. If you give suppressing fire when you lean around corners, the crosshairs will vanish. But you can also aim manually behind cover – and that’s necessary in the highest difficulty level.

Our conclusion about the demo of James Bond 007 – Quantum of Solace: This is a licensed game that has potential.

seems nice, but the 30 fps cap is awful.
also the use cover is a bit weird feeling.
this will prolly be tweaked some before release

It is possible that the developers will remove the fps limit in the final version, but if they don't there could be ways to deactivate it manually like in Unreal Tournament 3.

Although I'm a 007 lover, have been watching the movies since I was 10 or so... I really dont think this game will be that great... something about it from what I have read/seen makes it appear a pretty average game.

I heard about the demo being 5 to 10 min short... not going to bother with it.

Hopefully I'm wrong and its good ... just finished Warhead, now that was a damn good game! I want more, especially for the $30 this was amazing value.
