NfS series from back then until today

Need for Speed in the course of time: 16 years of cars compared

Hardly any game series contains that many titles as Need for Speed - with Hot Pursuit the 14th part to be released. We take a look back at the year 1994, at the origin of the NfS series and go all the way to the end in 2010 with Hot Pursuit. How did the cars change over all these years?

The "Need for Speed”, luxury cars, beautiful landscapes and since part 7 (Underground) good-looking girls - all that stands for the successful NfS series. All in all the series consists of twelve official parts plus the online offspring Motor City and World Online and diverse special editions. Here are the individual games with the year they have been released in:

• The Need for Speed (1994)
• Need for Speed 2 (1997)
• Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit (1998)
• Need for Speed 4: High Stakes (1999)
• Need for Speed 5: Porsche (2000)
• Need for Speed 6: Hot Pursuit 2 (2002)
• Need for Speed 7: Underground (2003)
• Need for Speed 8: Underground 2 (2004)
• Need for Speed 9: Most Wanted (2005)
• Need for Speed 10: Carbon (2006)
• Need for Speed 11: Pro Street (2007)
• Need for Speed 12: Undercover (2008)
• Need for Speed 13: Shift (2009)
• Need for Speed 14: Hot Pursuit (2010)

The Need for Speed:
The first part of the series was released in 1994 for the 3DO and one year later on the PC. With eight first-class cars like the Porsche 911 or the Dodge Viper you can drive on seven tracks and if you want to, be chased by the police. A Replay feature tops The Need for Speed off.

Need for Speed 2
The successor to The Need for Speed offers circuits, prototypes like the Ford GT90 and stock cars like the Lotus Esprit. The handling gets a first arcade touch - a development that is continued in later parts. The Special Edition cooperates with 3dfx graphics cards and allows the player to drive the track mirror inverted.

Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit
The name says it all. The almost legendary races against the cops could be driven behind the steering wheels of cars like the DB7 or the corvette. The police chased you with Lamborghini Diablo, blocked the streets to stop you. On the Playstation you could even take the role of the law enforcement.

Need for Speed 4: High Stakes
In the fourth part the best features were the career mode and the police helicopters.

Need for Speed 5: Porsche
The eponymous cars of the German company represented the vehicles available in the fifth Need for Speed game. Porsche 996 and the other cars had a damage model indeed, but you could wreck the high-class rides. This fact is continued till this day since almost no car producer wants to see his cars being demolished in video games.

Need for Speed 6: Hot Pursuit 2
Der siebte Teil bringt wieder Cops, Helis und Nagelstreifen mit sich und gilt unter Fans als der letzte "echte" Need-for-Speed-Titel. Dank neuer Engine sehen die Verfolgungsjagden auch noch super aus.

Need for Speed 7: Underground
Underground take place - the name gives it away - in the underground. In the style of the movie The Fast And The Furious you take part in illegal street races with mainly Asian sports cars. The most important feature has been the tuning that allowed you to customize your car.

Need for Speed 8: Underground 2
In Underground 2 you are on the streets at night again, but there are new racing modes, cars and tuning extras. Although there is a multiplayer part, there still aren't cops involved once more.

Need for Speed 9: Most Wanted
Less tuning more light and finally cops again: To reach first place on the Most Wanted list, you run high speed chases with luxury cars like the Carrera GT. The Speed Breaker mode, some kind of bullet time, helps you to dodge your pursuers.

Need for Speed 10: Carbon
The tenth part of the series continuous the story of Most Wanted and introduces the canyon races. Buddies are supposed to help you and make races more interesting. Since you can only drive races at night time again and great new features haven't been introduced, many fans were dissapointed.

Need for Speed 11: Pro Street
Instead of illegal races through the city you drive on closed off tracks in Pro Street - at day time and without cops. Especially the rather frumpy engine came under criticism by the fans.

Need for Speed 12: Undercover
The story about an officer who is supposed to infiltrate the organized crime isn't new and the graphics are more or less average only. Even the fact that you are the cop and lots of new tuning extras can't save the day.

Need for Speed 13: Shift
EA returns to realism with Number 13, Shift, which was released 2009. At least, Shift was more realistic than the previous games of the series. Slightly Mad Studios revived the series.

Need for Speed 14: Hot Pursuit
Just announced at E3, the classic title indicated "back to the roots". Criterion, well known for the Burnout series, take the lead to develop the epic race between the police and the racer guys.

For PC's the best NFS was Underground 2. Just basing it on using higher graphics and cpu than the console version. After that they really didnt care that much about PC's.

Most Wanted and Carbon were not even multi-threaded when Dual Core CPU's where out for a while.
Look at Pro-street. They released a patch that limited the Frames Per Second to 30.
And now no more demos?... Its hard to care about the NFS series anymore.

Edit_
the only reason we need demos from the NFS series now is because they realeased alot of crap and we just cant trust that it will be a good game without playing the demo.

Mainly earlier series was cool, cause back in time there was an effect of something new.

Have not tried Undercover, Pro Street or Shift though, but judging by the reviews they are quite mediocre, well not Shift maybe.

I think Underground 1/2 and MW are most fun of NFS series.

The feedback from the NFS fans is currently not too good.
