The new version 4.64 of the freeware file archiver 7-Zip is ready for download.
A couple of years ago nearly no Windows user could do without Winzip - the commercial software was the quasi-standard of all packing programs. Today numerous alternatives are available for free and their functionalities match the charged suites in almost every way.

7-Zip is not only for free but also an open source software and therefore in constant development. The small, fast and reliable tool unpacks all popular formats (from ZIP via RAR to ISO and CAB) and among other things compression into the ZIP format is possible. Furthermore a proprietary standard called 7z is supported. To some extent it offers an even higher compression ratio than the very efficient RAR.
7-zip optionally can connect to the Windows Shell and special versions can be used via the command line. It runs under all Windows versions from 98 to Vista. The download of the released final version 4.64 is available on the developer's website (
