Wireless USB transmits audio and video data

USB 3.0 with 170 MByte/s at the Cebit

At an open presentation the USB Implementers Forum showed USB 3.0 and Wireless USB for the first time. Data rates of 170 MByte per second are realizable.

There have been several reports about the theory behind USB 3.0 and Wireless USB but at the Cebit we were able to see the technology in action: Jeff Ravencraft from the USB Implementers Forum presented the new technology. With an SSD transfer speeds of up to 170 MByte per seconds were reached. But USB can do even more.

In a practical copy operation the setup reached 60 MByte per second - depending on the file system, file size and block size more wasn't possible. But this is still much faster than other technologies. When USB 3.0 will hit the mainstream markets can only be estimated at the moment. The first Host Controllers are already under construction.

Wireless USB on the other hand is not really new anymore, but still is a niche product. But it could become more interesting if devices which have been on display at the Cebit can establish themselves on the market. With a wireless dongle video and audio data was transferred from a PC to a monitor.
