Power consumption of displays (LCDs)

Power consumption: 30 LCDs tested

In the course of a big special dealing with the power consumption of PC components, we also tested 30 LCDs.
With increasing screen size the power consumption of LCDs is increasing, too.

Our tests reveal that the power consumption of LCDs is increasing with the screen-size. The applied resolution on the other hand doesn't affect the power consumption. The biggest part of the required energy is used for the backlight and thus the brightness is having an effect on the power consumption. We tested all LCDs with 180 Candela per square meter. With increasing screen size more power is required for the backlight because of which the bigger displays have higher power consumption. For comparison we also tested two old CRT displays: The monitors need up to 100 watt and offer a screen size of 19 inch. Some 22 inch LCDs need only 20 watt. So the new display technology is definitely more efficient.

I wonder how much it will reflect on my electricity bill though. But my 28" definitely gets very hot.
