New Patch for GTA 4

GTA 4 (PC): Version 1.0.4.0 is ready for download

Patch 4 for GTA 4 has been released. The download is 56 MByte big and updates the game to version 1.0.4.0 delivering only few improvements.

Rockstar has released Patch 4 for GTA 4 which brings the game to version 1.0.4.0. According to the readme file the only thing changed is: "Resource management adjustments based on the operating system detected.” What this means for the PC gamers will probably be revealed soon. As usual logged in PCGH users can download the patch below.

Patch 1.0.3.0 for the PC version of GTA 4 has been released. Given the many enhancements listed in the change log and the first positive reactions of the GTA 4 fans the 55 MByte big update is worth the download. PC Games Hardware is currently running benchmarks and it seems like the performance has been increased. One thing the patch definitely improves is the recognition of graphics cards with more than 1 GiByte video memory.

Among several bug fixes the Patch 1.0.3.0 also delivers new options like the possibility to switch shadows or reflections on and off even without modifying the game files. You can download Patch 1.0.3.0 for GTA 4 from Rockstar's website. Logged in members of the PCGH community can also use the One-Click-Download below.

- All light sources appear for users with 1900 series ATI cards. (ie. Pool Mini Game)

SECURITY:
* Detect modified files and prevent users from entering multiplayer if found
- Game will prompt with a message after blocking user with modified data files from entering multiplayer
- Should prevent multiplayer access from cell phone and GFWL join in progress

VIDEO EDITOR:
* Scroll Bar improved response
- Tweaked to respond better to keyboard inputs
* Sped up load times for users with many clips

TITLE UPDATE 2 FIXES:
* Return of Hot Dog Stands and other props
- Missing hot dog vendors, fences, gates, pylons should be present throughout the world.
* Scrolling signboards
- Activate missing scrolling signboard text (ie. highway signs, Star Junction, Clock Tower Sign)
* ALT-TAB pauses game during cutscenes
- Cutscenes should now pause and resume correctly after an ALT-TAB task switch. Audio remains in sync.

GENERAL ADDITIONS / FIXES:
* Mismatched MODO/Perseus Clothing
- Fixed a bug when Niko mixes clothing from Perseus and Modo
* 360 Controller Texture
- Controller image should be visible in Controller Configuration screen

Mixed results here for me, what I noticed right away is that this patch breaks out "Render Quality" into the various separate detail settings, like Reflection, Water, Shadow Quality etc. If you had this set to "Very High" before, these new individual settings are only set to "High" after the patch. What this may do is trick you into thinking you are getting better performance at the same settings, when in reality you are running lower settings resulting in better performance.

I don't doubt there were some tweaks to enhance performance perhaps on lower end systems, but on a relatively fast machine (Q6600@3.6 with a GTX 280) I haven't seen any improvement, if anything my performance went down as the patch allowed for a few higher graphical settings which I set to the highest. I used to get 54 FPS in the benchmark, only got 43 when I ran it after the patch. Will tweak it a bit more and see if it was a fluke or what.

Also noticed right away that this patch will break and undo any Depth of Field, Motion Blur and Smooth Shadow mods if you applied any. The Depth of Field is really horrible as it makes everything overly blurry and gives the screen a "vaseline effect". The Smooth Shadow setting is quite excellent as it seems to increase number of Alpha to Coverage samples and increases alpha blending level, which results in a similar effect to antialiasing. Its particularly noticeable on shadows but also alpha textures like trees, fences etc. The Motion Blur mod is also very good as it smooths out motion at lower frame rates making fast moving scenes at low FPS appear much more fluid.

If you are playing GTA IV then GET THIS PATCH ASAP!!!

I started playing GTA IV last week and I've done a few hours so far.. still on first island.

I have a 3.5ghz Core2Duo with 2GB DDR866 and 8800GTX overlocked to Ultra levels.
I am running 1680x1050 with maximum details, everything on high or very high and as far as the game will let me take the sliders (vehicle density on full).

With 1.2 patch I would get between 20 and 35 fps, avg would be 25ish.

Now with 1.3 patch I am getting between 30 and 45 (sometimes 50) fps.. avg would be 35 which is very playable.

The game has become even more fun... a bit easier to drive when the action gets hot!

Highly recommended... I didnt even notice that the hot dog stands were missing bcos of patch 1.2
