Microsoft has announced that its Encarta encyclopedia will be discontinued. The online service MSN Encarta will go offline worldwide on October 31. Only Japan will be able to access the Microsoft reference guide until December 31. The software version which is available at the retailers is supposed to be sold until June 2009.

The reason for discontinuing is that the seeking and consuming of information has changed. In the past people took an encyclopedia to get information but nowadays the internet offers quite different options. Therefore Microsoft has decided to discontinue the Encarta after 16 years.

Subscribers of MSN Encarta Premium will receive a refund of their fees.

Without Encarta there will only be two big reference guides: Wikipedia and Encyclopaedia Britannica.
