Half-Life 2 vs. Cinematic Mod 10: Visual comparison - Update: New darker look [Top article of August 2009]

The Cinematic Mod 10 is, as reported, already under construction. PC Games Hardware compares the original Half-Life 2 (dt.) with Fakefactory's Cinematic Mod 10.

2009 is coming to an end and PC Games Hardware takes a look at the past year. What caught the attention of our users and the people on the web? To answer this question we checked our statistics and searched for the most popular articles of the year. Today we want to reveal the top article of August 2009. This article is also the second most viewed article of the whole year.

With the Cinematic Mod 10 the graphics of Half-Life 2 (dt.) are upgraded once more: One of the most interesting features is the new additional Alyx model that is based on Jamil Mullen who had been the original real life model for Alyx. The controversial version which is based on Adriana Lima will also be on board. All the optional HD versions of Alyx have more realistic eyes with simulated moisture and diffuse environmental reflections. In motion and in combination with Valve‘s outstanding Facial Animation system the characters appear very alive.

For the 10th revision of the Cinematic Mod Fakefactory also overhauled many textures. Those have an extreme high resolution and are applied to any NPC as well as many objects. Furthermore the HDR Rendering that had been introduced with Episode 2 has been upgraded and when Gorden Freeman sprints, his movement is simulated via Head bobbing.

Update: June 11. 2009
Besides the comparative pictures, which have been created by PCGH on basis of the CM 10 Beta 1, there now is new material from Fakefactory. By his own account he currently focuses on filling the outdoor areas, which are rather empty for today's standards, with some eye catchers and tries to create a colder and more unfriendly atmosphere. In order to do so he also activates the fog again to recapture the original feeling. The maps become a little more post-apocalyptic. Furthermore there are some new hills and Skybox transitions here and there so that the atmosphere is not ruined by mountains popping into existence. Below you can see comparisons with the original game.

The screenshots below compare the original Half-Life 2 (dt.) with the Cinematic Mod 10 Beta. On the next page you can find more comparisons that show the differences between the Alyx models as well as the high-res textures and the upgraded opponent models.

In order to increase the visual quality of the CM10 shots even further, we activated Ambient Occlusion in the Geforce driver. All pictures were taken at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 with 4x TSSAA and 16:1 HQ-AF.

I remeber when he started adding things into the maps, and a downed 747 wing kind of kept getting in the way of one of the buggy jumps (or the buggy's weight was altered), as I found a simple bridge jump (the one where the gunship comes in) became so hard to pull off. At one point, I bounced off the wing, and rolled down it - but it still said game over.

But I sure didn't come here to *****. I love this mod. Still need to get that new dream machine together to run the latest version though.

Just wondering what level of graphics Valve will release with Episode 3. Might be a bit behind the times with CM10 now around.

"when Gorden Freeman sprints, his movement is simulated via Head bobbing"

Is this really true? That sounds fantastic, because without any camera movements it feels like you are just gliding around.
