Resident Evil 5: Graphics cards benchmarks

The official benchmark demo of the Resident Evil 5 PC version has been released. PC Games Hardware tests eleven graphics cards for their capabilities.

The new part of the Resident Evil series is based on the MT Framework Engine, like Devil May Cry 4. Capcom's development utilizes almost any modern rendering technology from HDR, Hemisphere Lighting as well as Soft Shadows and Soft Particles to Depth of Field and Motion Blur or Alpha To Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Besides the massive multi-core optimizations the MT Framework (2.0) offers, it is DirectX 11 ready, but the version used for Resident Evil 5 is "only" a DirectX 9 respectively DirectX 10 renderer. In comparison to the console version the PC version of Resident Evil 5 delivers sharper textures and offers higher resolutions.

Resident Evil 5: Benchmark Tool and Results
Capcom has released the benchmark tool of Resident Evil 5. For our tests we use the "Variable Benchmark”. It contains three gameplay passages and an intro sequence. For more specific results we also use the tool Fraps and record the minimal framerate.

Under DirectX 9 Geforces and Radeons behave as it is expected in a game based on the MT Framework Engine: AMD cards are, like in Street Fighter 4, a little ahead. The Radeon HD 4890 is continuously beating the Geforce GTX 275 - although the Anisotropic Filtering of the Radeon is flickering stronger.

If Resident Evil 5 is running in DirectX 10 all Radeon cards suffer noticeable losses in performance and a Radeon HD 4890 isn't much faster than a Geforce GTS 250/1G - the Geforces on the other hand are running faster than they do under DirectX 9. The second in-game section of the "Variable Benchmark” is reproducibly running slow on Radeon cards and a HD 4870 X2 delivers distortions and crashes tacitly. As you can see in our article Resident Evil 5: PC vs. Xbox 360 and DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10 - graphics comparison the two rendering paths don't differ much in matter of graphics.

Resident Evil 5 is a title of Nvidia's TWIMTBP program - so the question arises if AMD did not yet have a chance to optimize the Catalyst drivers for the DX10 version of the MT Framework Engine. The performance, the unexplainable loss in the second sequence and the distortions support this theory. However it is strange that in an TWIMTBP title Nvidia's SLI is set to "off” in the configuration file.

Please bear in mind that Resident Evil 5 won't be released until fall and thus the results of the benchmark tool have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
