In matters of technology Crysis is extraordinary. With the appropriate console commands and the right set of hardware the game can be run at resolutions which are even beyond all Donwsampling possibilities. PC Games Hardware explains how this works.

Crysis and Crysis Warhead give you the option to change the screen resolution via console commands. Here you have even more possibilities than offered in the video options. If you enter a number of pixels that is higher than the native resolution of your display, the engine downsamples the picture. In other words: If you run Crysis with 3,360 x 2,100 pixels on your 21 or 22 inch display (usual native resolution is 1,680 x 1,050) the game is visualized with pure 2x2 (4x) Supersampling Anti Aliasing. The resolutions can be entered into the command console without any preceding modifications. Just type "r_width XXXX” and "r_height XXXX” where XXXX is the number of pixels you want (horizontal and vertical). Below you can see a sample picture:

We tested the in-game Downsampling on a Samsung Syncmaster 305T Plus which has a native resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. 5,120 x 3,200 pixels forced via the console result in 4x SSAA (2x2 OGSSAA), 6,400 x 4,000 pixels even in 6.25x SSAA (2.5 x 2.5). More is not possible without slowing the game down to slide show speed - even at these settings the framerate reaches single digit values only. This is quite impressive since we are using a SLI setup with two overclocked Geforce GTX 285 with 2 GiByte VRAM each. A single GTX 285 with 1,024 MiByte VRAM crashes immediately if challenged with 6,400 x 4,000 - even without MSAA.
The pictures in our gallery below have been taken at 6,400 x 4,000 (25.6 Mpix). A single bitmap file of this resolution is about 97.6 MiByte big. Since even JPEG files are too big, we have resized the shots to 1,280 x 800 pixels. The result is 5x5 Supersampling. Four screenshots with the original size can be found as a download file at the end of this article.
When taking a look at the pictures pay attention to the filigree details which are absolutely clear and smoothed due to the Samplings. By the way: Neither the tool Fraps nor the Print button are able cover such huge pictures. If you want to take screenshots bigger than 2,650 x 1,600 pixels yourself, you need Evga's Precision.
