By releasing a free software tool Nvidia wants to make real-time Ray Tracing more attractive for developers. Nvidia calls the real-time Ray Tracing engine Optix which is run on Nvidia's professional graphics cards of the Quadro FX series. Up to now Optix has been known as NVIRT (Nvidia Interactive Raytracer) and is intended for games and applications like 3Ds Max, Maya and Auto CAD. The possible fields of operations are the car industry, photorealistic rendering, visual simulations or scientific projects.

The introduced software package also contains Complex (multi GPU control) and Scenix (management of 3D data and 3D scenes). Furthermore there is a 64 Bit version of Physx, too. Nvidia already offers the engines of Scenix and Complex for download and Optix as well as the 64 Bit Physx are supposed to follow in fall.

In our gallery you can find several sample pictures of ray traced material. More information about Nvidia's Optix is expected to be released soon.
