Photorealistic Renderings: The game graphics of the future?

In matters of quality offline renderings are still far ahead of real-time rendered pictures. PC Games Hardware presents works by Fabrice D and Fygomatic, who specialized on rendering female celebrities and Science Fiction characters.

Fabrice D and Fygomatic both are masters of their trade. While Fabrice D works with Vue, a software series from E-on software, Fygomatic uses Poser, a program that is specialized for animation and design of figures. Both artists are active members of the digital arts community Renderosity.

Fygomatic is mainly dealing with celebrities like Sophia Loren, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman or Adriana Lima and updates his portfolio at Renderosity on a regular basis. Fabrice D also presents digital beauties, characters and Science Fiction pictures in his portfolio at Renderosity.

Given the current developments in the sector of real-time rendering or for example the recent introduction of Nvidia's Optix Ray Tracing engine, what is your opinion on the renderings shown in the gallery. Will video games, in the near future, reach a comparable visual quality? Or is the available hardware still a limiting factor in matters of graphics? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Yuck. Feels like crawling through the brain of a very lonely 15-year-old boy.

99% of the characters in my games are my avatar's back, and soon-to-be-killed enemies. Who needs photorealistic skin & hair ? Highly detailed, realistic environments - that's what I'm craving for, not virtual hot dates from outer space.

some great pics there

however,i really can't imagine genuine real time quasi-photorealism realism (something along the lines of wall-E or whatever the latest pixar studios jaw dropping animated film may be) with all the complexity of animation(animation is still pretty basic when you see how far textures and other effects have come along),post processing and god knows what else that would be required happening for at least another 10 years...and probably more like 12-15. im no expert, but i would guess that..in terms of raw horsepower regardless of advances in shader modelling, physics etc something in the order of at least 20-30 times the power of todays gpus would be required.i hope im wrong though!

Why are we talking bout tis like the tech. is still far away? Crysis cutscene anyone? And dont we have like Quad-gpu?

Cant we like we program one or even 2 gpu just to do the model animation ala Crysis cutscene in real time and let the other 2 GPU do the remaining rendering?

But....you obviously wont be playing at your 2560*1600 resolution. 1280*1024? no? 800*600?

and....dat wud just be pointless rite?

so yeah. Have to sorta agree wit Unregistered then.

It's do-able..but it's just not feasible....
