Roaming the seas of WW2 in PT boats

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea - System requirements, screenshots and performance estimation

In PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, you are on duty on one of the name giving torpedo boats. PC Games Hardware has the official system requirements as well as in-game screenshots and an estimation of the performance.

During World War II the US Navy used small motor boats that were armed with machineguns and torpedoes. Their hull code was PT and thus they became generally known as PT Boats. In the new game PT Boats: Knights of the sea you command one of those vessels: you can either man the guns yourself (action mode) or are responsible for a whole group of the boats (simulation mode). The game offers more than 50 nautical vehicles, among them are submarines, destroyers and battleships.

The Russian developers at Akella caused quite a stir in 2007 when they released the DirectX 10 benchmark PT Boats: Knights of the Sea - logged in PCGH members can download the benchmark below). Although the final game doesn't look much better, the STORM 2.5 Engine is nevertheless able to deliver for an impressive visualization of water - including Soft Particles - and in combination with the HDR lighting a dense atmosphere is created. The renderer supports MSAA and uses the CPU version Nvidia's Physx for the physics calculations.

On our test system - a 3.0 GHz Core i7 (SMT and Turbo Mode are deactivated), a Geforce GTX 260-216 @ 702/1.404/1.162 MHz and 6 GiByte DDR3-1200 - the framerate of PT Boats: Knights of the Sea was varying between 25 and 70 frames per second (1,920 x 1,200; 4x MSAA/16:1 HQ AF; D3D10 and max details). Especially bigger fights with more than five ships and a lot of smoke lower the fps, while smaller skirmishes were running at about 40 to 50 fps. PT Boats: Knights of the Sea does not benefit from more than two cores, the CPU usage varied between 30 and 40 percent.

Therefore the system requirements seem to be quite appropriate:

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea - Minimal System Requirements
• OS: Windows XP SP2 x86
• CPU Pentium 4 with 2.5 GHz or comparable processor
• GPU: Geforce 6200 / Radeon X1300 (at least 256 MiByte VRAM)
• RAM: 1 GiByte
• HDD: 2 GiByte

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea - Recommended System Requirements
• OS: Windows Vista X86
• CPU: Core 2 Duo E6700 or comparable processor
• GPU: Geforce 8800 GTX / Radeon HD 4850 (512 MiByte VRAM and DX10)
• RAM: 2 GiByte
• HDD: 2 GiByte

Hear of this benchmark when at the first time Windows 7 was released, but never tested it.

Good new, PCGH! I will try to run in on the weekend in a free moment.
