Far Cry meets Crysis: Highest quality with Advanced Graphics Mod, Content Update and Tweaks

Crysis bores you? Then take another look at Crytek's five year old Far cry (dt.) and upgrade its graphics with tricks and tweaks. PC Games Hardware explains how to do it and presents the impressive result.

In advance: If you bring Far Cry (dt.) to the visual level of Crysis, the hardware requirements will be increased appropriately. So you should have a capable system and in order to prevent bigger problems you should patch the game to version 1.4, too.

Far Cry meets Crysis: Mods and Tweaks
First of all you need to download and install the Exclusive Content Update (ECU) that improves some textures and the draw distance. Next in line is the Advanced Graphics Mod. This modification doesn't replace the textures of Far Cry (dt.) with higher resolution versions but sharps them a little. Thus the textures appear more detailed and have a better contrast ratio. Step three is to download the PC Games Hardware FC Tuning Configs (download link at the end of the page). The archive contains a systemcfgoverride.cfg, which delivers the approximately optimum for outdoor levels, and the devmode.lua, which again contains an important entry for deactivating the Level of Detail. Both files have to be placed in the main folder of the game. Finally you need to activate the enhanced shader in the Far Cry video options.

Now the game will already have an increased draw distance, enhanced shadows and the sun will be reflected in the water.

Far Cry meets Crysis: Developer Mode
You want more? Then you need to modify the Far Cry desktop shortcut. Add "-devmode” (without the quotation marks) to the target box. If you run the game with this shortcut, you can now make use of the advantages delivered by the devmode.lua file. It allows you to create a quick save by pressing the F5 key and to deactivate the Level of detail for the vegetation with the F6 key. The latter option results in a lower framerate, but therefore you get more details as far as the horizon.

Far Cry meets Crysis: The cherry on the cake
During the many tests we made with Crysis we noticed that the DirectX 10 mode of the game has some kind of sharpness filter and everything is a little less colorful. The interesting thing is that the video options of Far Cry (dt.) offer a render mode which delivers a similar effect. You get used to the "sharpened” graphics quite fast ad might prefer this mode.

It is also possible to activate this rendering via the command "r_HDRRendering = x” in the system.cfg file. The "x” stands for a value from 1 to 7 and determines the intensity of the effect. But problems in combination with FSAA are possible though.

All pictures in our gallery have been taken with the mentioned improvements at ta resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels including 16xS Anti aliasing and 16:1 Anisotropic Filtering. By downsizing the shots to 1680 x 1050 pixels the Anti Aliasing gets even better (Supersampling). Due to the increased draw distance, deactivated LoD, sharper textures and Bump Maps in certain locations Far Cry (dt.) reaches a new quality level that can be compared even to newer games. We did not use HDR Rendering because it caused problems on our test system.
