New information and pictures of AMD's new generation of graphics cards have been made available: Apparently the website alienbabeltech.com wants to have learned the final specifications of the Radeon HD 5870 and the Radeon HD 5850. Besides already announced features like Ati Eyefinity, which is said to allow up to three displays with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, performance relevant details have been unveiled. Those seem to be quite realistic.

According to the report the Radeon HD 5870 has more than two billion transistors on a chip of more than 330 square millimeters and delivers, in combination with the GDDR5 VRA, a bandwidth of more than 150 GByte per second. Thereby the card is said to need only 28 watt in 2D mode and only 190 watt on maximal workload. The HD 5850 and the HD 5870 are said to have the following specifications:

Radeon HD 5870 Radeon HD 5850 Radeon HD 4890
Shader units 1,600 1,440 800
Texture units 80 unknown 40
Chip frequency 850 MHz 700 MHz 850 MHz
Memory frequency 1,200 MHz 1,000 MHz 975 MHz

The Radeon HD 5850 and the HD 5870 are said to hit the markets on September 23 for 299 respectively 399 USD. The Radeon HD 5850 X2 will follow in second half of October.

Besides the yet unconfirmed specifications tweakers.com got new pictures of an alleged Radeon HD 5870. Based on the length of the PCI Express connectors we estimate a overall length of 26 centimeters for the card.

I'm excited about these new cards simply because I love technology and new generations of GPU's/ CPU's etc... but I'll be waiting for the new Nvidia cards before thinking about upgrading as I do prefer Nvidia overall.

Guys, some nicer pics here:
