Stalker: Call of Pripyat - The first DirectX 11 screenshots - Update: More DX11 pics [Top article of September 2009]

AMD had introduced Stalker: Call of Pripyat as DirectX 11 game some days ago. Now the developers have confirmed the support for DX11 and released new screenshots.
2009 is coming to an end and PC Games Hardware takes a look at the past year. What caught the attention of our users and the people on the web? To answer this question we checked our statistics and searched for the most popular articles of the year. Today we want to reveal the top article of September 2009.

Original article:
Stalker COP DirectX 10 vs. DirectX 11: Tesselation (1)

GSC has released the first DirectX 11 screenshots of Stalker: Call of Pripyat. You can find them in our picture gallery. Below we have also assembled comparisons that show the difference between DirectX 10 and DirectX 11. They show for example the DirectX 11 shadows and Hardware Tesselation via DirectX 11.

PC Games Hardware had already compared DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 graphics in Stalker: Call of Pripyat. The official system requirements of Stalker: Call of Pripyat were revealed some days ago, too.

What do you think of the pictures? Tell us in the comments.

Update October 13, 2009
In the meantime AMD provided us with more screenshots of DirectX 11 features such as shadows and Hardware Tessellation. Please refer to our gallery.

DarkStalker, I also agree: If you got a decent GPU for gaming, better wait until next Dx 11 GPU gen.

I will recommend SDD HDD (64 GB / 128 which are afordable in price: but I wont bet on raptors HDDs)

People! I always buy graphic card with latest technology supported, but shadow example from pictures is not worth our money. That is a little graphic trick that can be done also with directx 10(even with directx 9!).
I say wait for the 2-ond generation of directx 11 cards and let's see how many dx11 games will be made in next year. Don't be naive, 'cause just as in past it will not be such radicale difference like between shader model 2 and sm3 it was. Be clever and wait, your dx10 cards are more than capable to shine for a while little longer. Rather buy yourselves a stronger cpu or raptor hdds.

As said: You might still hope, that more games will offer DX10.1 support, when similar features are developed anyway for DX11. With usually <25% share of vista in gaming-communities, DX10 support was a low priority in the past and with the group of AMD-GPU-and-vista-using-gamers beeing even smaller, DX10.1 would have been a waste of time.
But with the big interest in Win7, soon a very large proportion of gamers will run DX10/10.1/11 operating systems and with ALL HDxxxx-Cards and even some new Nvidia units supporting DX10.1 (but not 11), the implementation of 10.1 tesselation should be much more attractive.

(though I personally still wander, what sense it should make. Imho current GPUs are mainly limited by their shading-capacity and memory bandwith, not by the PCI-E connection. A system, that allows easy transmission of high-detailed geometry to the GPU, but changes nothing in the rendering process, doesn't seem to be a big benefit in this situation)

(even if they could technically, it remains questionable, wether the activation of only one DX11 feature will be possible, though the likelyhood of DX10.1 modes in games rises a fraction)

As I read DX 10 cant do Tesseletion it was something ATI implement in their Cards for the Future, DX10.1 can. But its not clear if 4870 will work with DX11 Tessellation. Lets hope it does.

The GPU is equipped with an extra feature which is not part of the current DirectX 10.0 specification. It contains programmable tessellation units, similar to those within the Xenos GPU (codenamed "C1") also developed by ATI. This unit allows a developer to take a simple polygon mesh and subdivide it based on a curved surface evaluation function, with different tessellation forms as Bézier surfaces with N-patches, B-splines and NURBS, and even some subdivision surface techniques, which usually comes with a displacement map texture.[4] Essentially, this allows a simple, low-polygon model to be increased dramatically in polygon density in real-time with minimized performance loss. Scott Wasson of Tech Report noted during an AMD demo of the technology that the resulting model was so dense with millions of polygons that it appeared to be solid.[2]

This unit is reminiscent of ATI's earlier "TruForm" technology, used initially in the Radeon 8500, which performed a similar function in hardware.[5] While this tessellation hardware is not part of the current OpenGL or Direct3D requirements, and competitors such as the GeForce 8 series lack similar hardware, Microsoft has included Tessellation as part of their D3D10.1 future plans.[6] The "TruForm" technology from the past received little attention from software developers and was only utilized in a few game titles (such as Madden NFL 2004, Serious Sam, Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, and unofficially Morrowind), because it was not a feature shared with NVIDIA GPUs which had a competing Tessellation solution using Quintic-RT patches which met with even less support from developers.[7] Since the Xenos contains similar hardware, and Microsoft sees hardware surface tessellation as a major GPU feature with proposed implementation of hardware tessellation support in future DirectX releases (presumably DirectX 11),[6][4] dedicated hardware tessellation units may receive increased developer awareness in future titles. It remains to be seen whether ATI's implementation will be compatible with the eventual DirectX standard.

Edit: You are right after reading more DX11 Tessellation requires DX11 Hardware to work. Its different from DX10.1 Tessellation. Source http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2329315,00.asp

Look at that side by side character shot. The DX11 version has a real, round filtration unit on its gas mask while DX10 doesnt and, a real, round helmet! Talk bout the magic of DX11.

Now i know i have to chuck my 4870 and get me a 5870.

ATI 4870 can do Tessellation so it will be possible to enable it. I am not in harry to buy a 5870 as 4870 can do Tessellation and supports DX10.1 that is very close to DX11.

STALKER Clear Sky in Xp (Dx 9). X-Ray Engine v.1.5: Characters:

With only a C2D E6600, GTX 260 216 896MB, 4GB, X-fi Xtreme Gamer, Xp & Vista 32:

(nowdays, a very basic gaming rig. But as STALKER Clear Sky do not benefit from more than one or two.... GPU is the main factor for Full HD resolutions, and the limit. As PCGH did in its day the great review: Thanks for it again!)

So sure in STALKER Call of Pripyat character will look similar at least and very probably better than in Clear Sky! -which is not bad at all, as you can see-.

Great FPS 1player, btw! (Still scares me to wander in the Red Wood at night, ha ha ha!)

P.S: Do not take this framerate so seriously, as pic was taken while testing different graphic options. This is maybe the FPS 1player game with the most complete in numbre of options. (3 times more elements than in the Crysis graphic option menu) Anyway, AA was x 2.

It depends on how you set some parameters (like Sun Ray, Distance view, texture quality..) in Xp. Much more easy to move than in Dx 10 or Vista, in which the game is where it shines better and offers its best graphic side.

Great Game! Can not wait until STALKER Call of Pripyat and STALKER 2!
