The next generation of Intel's Atom is coming up ahead. Atom D510 and D410 (Pineview) are based on Pine Trail and are supposed to have one remarkable feature: Energy efficiency.

It seems Intel is going to run a big update of the Atom series this year: The current CPU cores Silverthorne and Diaondville will be succeeded by the Pineview which is going to be introduced with the Pine Trail platform. Pineview has an integrated northbridge and the southbridge is called Tigerpoint.
On the retail market the new Atom processors will be available in the versions D510 (2 cores, 1.66 GHz) and D410 (1 core, 1.66 GHz). Both support SMT (also referred to as Hyperthreading) and have access to 512 KiByte L2 cache for each real core. The atom D510 is supposed to change hands for about 63 USD while the D410 is said to be sold for 43 USD and thus cost about as much as the current Atom 330.
According to Intel the energy efficiency of the new processors will be very high: The Atom D510 is said to have a TDP of only 13W. The southbridge needs two watt in addition. So all in all the power consumption adds up to only 15W. The current platform needs 33 watt. This also affects the cooling: Pine Trail doesn't have a fan. Intel wants to start shipping the D510MO (Mount Olive) in Q1 2010. Some kind of Home Server (codename Bandon), which is supposed to be combined with the ICH9R, follows at as later time,
