Star Wars: The Force Unleashed PC

Force Unleashed for PC: System requirements for the Star Wars game - is a 4000 Dollar PC necessary?

The announcement that Star Wars: The force Unleashed wouldn't be published for the PC had made many games angry back in 2008. But the developers changed their minds and in November the Ultimate Sith Edition will be released. But what are the system requirements?

You might remember: According to Lucas Arts' Cameron suey Star Wars: the force Unleashed won't be available on the PC, because the average computer is not fast enough. Only a system worth 4000 US Dollars would be able to handle Star Wars: The Force Unleashed appropriately. That rightly caused quite a stir among the PC gamers in May 2008.

But more than a year later, in course of the comic con 2209 Lucas Arts announced that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will, in form of the Ultimate Sith Edition, be released for the PC, too. This special version of the game will be published for PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3. It contains the two additional missions which are offered as DLC on the Xbox Marketplace as well as the planned mission Infinities. Furthermore a bonus level will bring the player to Hoth, where you will meet Luke skywalker, too.

Now Aspyr has unveiled the system requirements for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PC):

Minimal system requirements of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition
• Operating system: Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7
• CPU: Dual-core CPU with 2.4 GHz (Intel core 2 Duo or Athlon X2)
• RAM: 2 GiByte
• Graphics card: Shader model 3 with 256 MiByte VRAM (Radeon HD 2900 or Geforce 8800)
HDD: 24 GByte + 1 GByte swap file

Recommended system requirements of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition
• CPU: Intel core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 5200+
• Graphics card: Radeon HD 4870 or Geforce 9800 GT

Supported graphics cards:
• Ati Radeon HD 2900, 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870
• Nvidia Geforce 8800, 9600, 9800, 260, 280

Now, given the previous development, one question arises: Are those specs for a "4000 Dollar system”? Without knowing the exact prices at the moment one can definitely answer with No. Of course the requirements sound quite high in some regards, but some parts don't even make sense (HD 4870 and 9800 GT in the same performance class? Core 2 duo 2.8 GHz and Athlon X2 5200+ in the same sentence?)

What do you think? Use the comments to give your opinion on the system requirements of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

The info of the article is wrong, please correct this. Here's the original comment about the 4000$ PC:

[If we made the game for high-end PCs], someone with a low-end PC would have a watered down experience, they would have to turn all the settings down and it wouldn't be the same game. On the other hand if we made that game for as many people as possible then it's not taking advantage of what those $4,000 systems can do.

That doesn't sound like "YOU NEED a 4000$ PC TO RUN OUR GAME!!!" It sounds like "we cannot scale it very well".

Yeah, its not that they said you need 4000$, but more like they have no idea what they are doing and also prolly getting their hardware from some island with astronomical prices.

4870 vs 9800 clearly shows they have no clue.

And I agree with Yapa, prolly gonna be poor port so at least they have an excuse for all the PC folks who will complain about performance...

While I agree their original excuse was mostly BS, lets keep the timeframe of their comments in the correct context. The game was released a year ago, so the fact a 4870 is recommended is actually pretty beefy specs considering that was the 2nd fastest GPU at the time. And that's before taking higher resolutions and AA into account.

From what I've seen, the screenshots of the PC version look amazing so they might be right, it may take some pretty beefy graphics hardware to really run it well. Keep in mind, the console versions were running maybe 720p max at 30FPS, which is totally unacceptable to PC gamers. I played the demo in Best Buy and the graphics were horribly aliased and low-res and the game still had some slowdowns with a lot of object interaction, so I think we'll have to wait and see what the benches turn up.

If it takes a single 4870 or GTX 260/280 to run acceptably well with 4xAA at 1920 and ~50-60FPS and solidly utilizes 4 cores on a Phenom II/Core 2 or Core i5/i7 then I don't think their representation of a $4000 PC in 2008 would be too far off really......

Pretty confused specs and requirements!

I'm pretty sure the game will be a POOR port... and it will run very poorly because of this, NOT because of hardware.

Then when PC gamers complain about perforamnce problems, they will say "see... you need a console to run our engine as its unoptimised and we cant do any better scaling."

I'll be looking for benchmarks and opinions before getting this one, nothing worse than a poor performing port.

When is it coming out?

Oh snap........nice one PCGHX.

This was how $4000 pc look like a year ago for Lucas Arts, actually you could buy 4 of those systems. Why do they even bother give these kind of lame excuses.

The graphics card requirement are indeed pretty high.
4870 vs 9800GT ? Maybe the game runs a lot better with a Nvidia card ?
4000 Dollar PC? Not even close.

If the game can run well in a console with 256Mb of video memory and cant run well on a computer with 1Gb, then its a bad port, not lack of power.
