Instead of giving gamers the chance to create a dedicated server with individual rules, map rotations and mods, the developers decided to use the matchmaking application called IWNet. With this tool Infinity Wards wants to make sure that players with equal abilities are assigned to the same games. So called Private Matches are said to be allowed, but customization is still a big secret. Mod tools for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not be available at first.

Users have already started a petition for dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2. More than 50000 people have already signed this petition. Another petition that has been started directly in the Infinity Ward forum has been removed by the moderation. According to media reports the forums of the Modern Warfare 2 developer is in chaos already.

Nevertheless the petitions are unlikely to be successful since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will already be released on November 10, 2009. Nevertheless one might ask why Infinity Ward did wait so long before releasing this piece of information. There are already rumors that people in charge feared a negative impact on the pre-order business or wanted to prevent endless discussions before the game is finally released.

What it could mean to PC gamers if Modern Warfare 2 comes without dedicated servers has been summed up by the website Dotdosh. We listed the most important points:
• Matchmaking issues (players can't choose servers freely anymore)
• Higher latencies (the player himself is the server)
• No more big games (because of high latencies and automatic matchmaking)
• More cheating (VAC does not have a good reputation)
• No more user created mods
• Map Packs and DLC will probably be charged
• No clan servers

Update: October 20, 2009
The news that Modern Warfare 2 won't support dedicated servers and mods has caused heated discussions all over the Internet. Some people have vented their anger about the decision in a quite creative way. On Youtube someone posted a video that shows a well known scene from the movie Der Untergang (Downfall) that has been assigned with new subtitles about the recent changes in Modern Warfare 2 politics.

I didn't like the first MW MP and I just looked at couple of MW2 MP videos; there is absolute mess going on all over the screen. Can you remove all that Arcade style crap? Its cool as a mod, but it takes away from all the realism and concentration in MP, annoying SFX too. This is just not serious.

Talking about console influence...

I hope the next CSS won't be like this horsecrap.

i'm sure PC gamer companies like EA

I was agreeing with you until you babbled this ridiculous thing. EA is a PC gamer company?

They used to be. Exactly as IW used to be. They came up with MoH and IW basically made a copy of that with CoD (although a good game). EA is been giving crap to PC gamers for quite a while now, just check to see what happened to EA sports, especially the FIFA franchise.

Big companies (which started as small PC developers) will almost always go multi-platform with bad support for PC or weak ports.

No matter though; small names will always emerge (Crytek, CD Projekt, and other foreign companies) to make great PC titles. They in turn will start making multiplatform as they grow big. And thus the great chain will keep on going

No worries. PC will always have great games.

I think it is hilarious they claim the "Hardcore" gamer is the only one effected....classic double speak! Say the opposite of what you mean while claiming you mean the opposite of what you said!

I have news for Activision...the only reason I game is because of the friends in my clan I game with. When I am not gaming I run a business and SURF...in the ocean out of doors! I WILL NOT BE BUYING YOU CRAP GAME. To classify me as a nerd is so far out of touch with the reality of the PC gaming community as to be unfathomable.

I will not buy another IW game! IW, you would be wise to fix this massive screw up...no one in my clan...which is 10 years old...will be buying your piece of crap either!
