With a power consumption of less than one watt Samsung wants to have lowered the requirements of the external storage device Story Station by 95 percent.

For November Samsung announced the first external 3.5 inch storage device with a standby power consumption of less than one watt. The new Story station needs 95 percent less energy than before and thus easily matches the forthcoming requirements of the European EUP (Energy Using Products) which are supposed to come into effect in January 2010.
The power consumption of the Story Station has been lowered from the common 2.5 watt to only 0.09 watt. Thus Samsung is the first manufacturer to introduce the low standby power mode for external 3.5 inch devices. The reduced standby energy level has been reached with the development of a new circuit architecture that sends the drive into an idle mode as soon as the power cord is plugged in but the USB connection isn't established.
According to C.H. Lee, Vice President of Storage Sales & Marketing at Samsung, users now have access to an environmental friendly, energy saving external hard drive that also delivers high performance and reliability.
The 3.5 inch device is available with capacities of 1 and 1.5 TB. A version with 2 TB is supposed to follow in November. For the design and the integration of a cooling system the Story Station won the Good Design Award in Korea.
