Monochrome flair

The Saboteur (PC): Min vs. Max quality plus performance check

In Europe The Saboteur has hit the markets. PC Games Hardware checks the visual quality and gives an estimation of the performance.
The Saboteur is made by the Pandemic Studios, which have already been responsible for games like Star Wars Battlefront or Full spectrum Warrior. As the Irishman Sean Devlin you liberate Paris in the 1940s from the Nazis as a part of the French Resistance. In matters of gameplay the Saboteur offers sneaking and climbing sequences but also gunfights and chases.

The Saboteur

One of the most obvious and interesting visual effects is the contrast: Areas occupied by the Nazis are monochrome and only the occupying forces are red. When you liberate an area, it gets colored. The game is based on Pandemic's own Odin Engine which can transport the special flair quite well. Since Anti Aliasing is not supported and the Level of Detail is rather aggressive The Saboteur doesn't look as good in rural areas as it does in Paris or the very detailed indoor levels. In our gallery you can find more than 20 screenshots from the early part of the game that give an impression of what The Saboteur looks like.

Like in many other cross platform titles The Saboteur has a framerate limitation of 60 fps. A Core 2 Duo E8400 or Phenom II X2 550 BE plus a Radeon HD 4850 or Geforce 8800 GTS with 512 MiByte VRAM each, are enough to run the game at 1680 x 1050 with max details. If you have a card of the Radeon HD 5000 series, don't be surprised if the game freezes from time to time. This happened on all our test systems even when we exchanged the Catalyst 9.11 with other drivers.

On minimal details The Saboteur looses a lot of appearance because of the missing shadows and the very weak texture quality.

I run the game with a Q6600 @ 3.2 Ghz 4 Go of RAM and a Gigabyte Geforce 9800 GT o/c (700/1715/2200) with maximal details at 1280 x 1024 but the framerate is unstable and I can't reach the 60 fps...
Waiting for a patch !!!

Stay away from this game if you have an ATI card. The game freezes up like hell and the only way to get it to run is by disabling all your cores except one.

It runs but it'll be so damn slow and guess what? there's still the freezing problem. you have to alt-tab to the desktop and back to the game every 10 min.

They're still working on a patch and there's no ETA as of yet.

Now we know why Pandemic went under.

i'm goin back to Shattered Horizon now.
