GTA 5 in 2011 at the earliest: Grand Theft Auto series not on an annual schedule

According to an interview with Take Two CEO Ben Feder and the chairman Strauss Zelnick the GTA series is not, in contrast to Call of Duty for example, going to be released on an annual basis. Zelnick said: "We don't feel that GTA ought to be an annualized franchise”, and that the timing for the next game to be released after a big franchise and the expectations of the consumers has to be balanced.

After the release of GTA 4 on the consoles in Q2 2008 Take Two published two add-ons, "The Lost and Damned” (February 2009) and "The Ballad of Gay Tony” (October 2009), exclusively for the Xbox 360. PC gamers were provided with Grand Theft Auto 4 in December 2008. Besides that there is a handheld version called GTA: Chinatown Wars for the PSP and Nintendo DS.

Zelnick also mentioned that the basic strategy of the company won't change. Kotaku extracted the most important features of the interview.

I lost interest in the GTA series after GTA3.

GTA 1 was just epic at the time, and is still a good buzz, but GTA 3 was great for the laugh's. But I do think Take Two has gotten too carried away with the series, and given us more destruction mayhem with a shiny new limo to crash with.

Quality is what it's all about, rather than releases.
