Classics with better graphics: Dark Messiah of Might & Magic

What to do with the extra power of modern graphics cards? PC Games Hardware demonstrates what Dark Messiah of Might & Magic can look like if upgraded with high-end anti-aliasing modes.

New graphics cards and chips constantly increase the maximal performance possible with a gaming PC. One way to use this extra power is the option to improve the graphics of older games that are running extremely well already. PC Games Hardware takes a look at some popular classics and improves their graphics with different anti aliasing modes to make them shine like it wasn't possible when they had been released.

This time we played the popular Dark Messiah of Might & Magic at a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and applied 16:1 anisotropic filtering and 16xS (consists of: 2x2 Supersampling (Ordered Grid), 4x Multisampling (Sparse Grid) and 4x Supersampling for Alpha Textures (Sparse Grid)) with TSSAA (Transparency Supersampling Anti Aliasing). Furthermore we activated Ambient Occlusion in the Geforce driver and deactivated the game's automatic level of detail system to force a fixed value of -1.5 - this results in a higher draw distance for sharper textures.

In our gallery you can find several screenshots that have been downsized to 1280 x 800 which results in an additional anti aliasing effect.

Great stuff, now I have an excuse to reinstall DM yet again !

As usual, "before/after" screenshots would be great for proper comparison. And I hope you'll look into this AO issue, too.

What a coincidence! I have started playing darkmessiah recently. TBH I still find the graphics and gameplay appealing after all these years. Engaging and visceral combat.
