Though you would need a mainboard with at least two slots spacing between the x16. (considering the mars and the catastrophic air-ducting of this card, the ATX-maximum of 3-slot-spacing and very strong case ventilation might be good idea to reach full clock @stable)
Crossfire x3 with a HD5870 will run into difficulties with the crossfire-bridges: The Ares isn't just long, exzessively wide and higly power-hungry, it's also a couple of cm higher then conventional cards. Aside from compatibility issues with some cases, this will also mean, that any crossfire bridge has to be quite long and flexibel to strech around the monstrous cooler, bridge the (hopfully large) distance to the next card and descend far enough to reach the connectors on a lower level.

Likely Crossfire will be supported with 4 GPUs total, so you can use two of these special HD 5970 graphics cards (if you have a good >1000 Watt PSU at your hand ).
